Well, let us introduce to you - Polperro, a beautiful, traditional fishing village located just a few miles South of Looe.
If you did think smugglers, then Polperro was a base for many smuggling activities during the 18th and early 19th centuries due to the perfect shoreside location.
It was also renowned for Pilchards in the 19th century with most income coming from the catching, salting and packaging of the fish ready for distribution. Due to the nature of the business and its location boat building was also a main business for the area for many years.
To discover more about the villages’ history, you can visit The Polperro Heritage Museum of smuggling and fishing it has a wonderful collection of exhibits showing when smuggling was at its height in the village.
Nowadays the village is a wonderful place to meander through the narrow streets (which are banned from cars due to being so narrow), visiting the quaint little gifts shops or cafes whilst idolising at the pretty Cornish cottages covered with a profusion of flowers in the summer months.
It’s a wonderful place to explore when you come to stay, you can even grab a horse-drawn cart from the car park to save the legs!
The village has kept the tradition alive and is proud to hold art and craft exhibitions such as the Arts Festival in June along with other events including the Water Carnival and Furry Dance!
Of course, you may also be lucky enough to see or hear the famous Polperro Fisherman choir who give air performances on the quayside. And if you want to learn more about the sometimes-scary history then jump onto one of the boats who take you around the harbour for half an hour telling you more tales.
Then if you still have time and the weather is kind as Polperro has a wild and rocky shore along the rugged coastline it has natural pools which are used for swimming, so don your costume and jump in!
