The village of Lanreath, described by Sir John Betjeman as comprising “…old farms and trackways of undisturbed Cornwall..” is just two miles away and, despite its small size, is very well served by a community operated shop. Also nearby can be found the village of Pelynt, home of the famous Jubilee Inn, a more than four hundred year old coaching inn.
Accessed via the Bodinnick Ferry, the famous town of Fowey is only seven miles away. Renowned for its literary connections with authors such as Daphne du Maurier, it is also an outstanding sailing venue and home to one of the finest harbours in the country. Polperro, six miles away, is to many the archetypal Cornish fishing village and squeezes down the valley to a small harbour where you’ll find fishermen’s cottages and sail lofts clinging to the rocks.
Talland Bay can be found six miles away and provides three small beaches flanked by a rocky foreshore together with two of the nautical mile marker posts used for calculating the speed of ships. The commercial fishing port of Looe is seven miles away and for those prepared to rise early, the day’s catch can be seen auctioned on the quay.
Virtually every outlying village boasts a traditional country pub and there are many choices within a short distance together with other restaurants and takeaways. There are no shortages of local walks available, with public footpaths and bridleways running directly from Stonerush Lakes. Circular walks from the site are plentiful and diverse; cycling and horse riding is available nearby and this is just a taste of the activities that can be accessed in the immediate vicinity.
Liskeard is an ancient stannary and market town in south east Cornwall. Located approximately twenty miles west of Plymouth and twelve miles east of Bodmin, the town is at the head of the Looe valley in the ancient hundred of West Wivelshire.
Located on the southern edge of Bodmin Moor, Liskeard was granted its first charter back in 1240 and became an important market town which flourished with the onset of the copper mining boom in the nineteenth century. Today that prosperity can still be seen in the fine buildings dotted around the town. Webb’s House, a huge early Victorian former hotel dominates the town centre; shops have original Edwardian facades; medieval Stuart House once provided lodgings for Charles II; and the Guildhall is a fine example of Victorian grandeur with its imposing clock tower. Liskeard is a great place to stock up for a picnic or have a stroll around the old town stopping for a coffee at one of the many cafes.
Just four miles outside the town is home to Adrenalin Quarry - home to one of the UK’s biggest zip wires at over half a kilometre and one of the highest giant swings. Six miles away on the edge of Bodmin Moor is the ancient stone circle known as The Hurlers and the granite tor known as the Cheesewring.
Also nearby is the small historic, coastal town of Looe providing all you could ask of a holiday in Cornwall. Safe beaches, quality accommodation, a wide choice of restaurants, excellent walking routes, fishingtrips, diving and more.
