Live like a local: Top 7 Hobbies in Cornwall

There’s no doubt about it, the Cornish lifestyle is a relaxed and enriching way of life, no matter how you spend your time here. There are a plethora of reasons to live in this picture-postcard part of the county. But don’t just take our word for it. Here are just a few ideas on how you can tap into some of the best things about the region in your free time:

1) Surfing or kayaking

When it comes to water sports, there’s no place in the UK better than Cornwall. Home to some stunning beaches and award-winning surf schools, if you’ve never tried water sports before, now’s the time. There are classes to suit all ages and abilities.

2) Crafting

Collecting shells, interesting stones, dried flowers, driftwood, beach glass and other washed up gems, you can create some treasured items for the home, as gifts or as a fun activity with visiting family. Check out Pinterest for more ideas on beach or woodland themed crafts.

3) Foraging

Foraging for fun can be a really rewarding experience. Nothing tastes better than food you’ve found, foraged and cooked yourself. It’s important to be mindful of the countryside whilst foraging. Across the seasons the Cornish countryside is brimming with different wild goodies such as hedge garlic, berries, mushrooms, fennel and burdock. 4) Photography

Cornwall boasts some terrific sights, from breath-taking costal vistas and textured rural landscapes to cobbled fishing towns and vibrant city life. Drink up Cornish life through the lens of your camera, whether you’re an avid photographer interested in wildlife or experimenting with Instagram, there’s always something worth capturing in this diversely idyllic county.

5) Tai chi or yoga on the beach

Yoga or tai chi are both very gentle and uplifting disciplines that promote wellbeing, relaxation and provide a great opportunity to meet new people. Often you can find various yoga retreats set in picturesque parts of our county. Or just try one of the many drop-in classes available in most areas.

6) Water colour or creative writing classes

Novelist and poet William Golding and painter John Dyer are amongst hundreds of artists and writers who have taken inspiration from Cornish life. And you can too. There are many creative writing and watercolour classes in the region including the world-famous St Ives School of Painting.

7) Conservation

Or use your hobby to help the planet and Cornwall’s wildlife. Find a cause that means a lot to you, simply help to keep the county clean or here are just a few environmental volunteering opportunities in the area: https://www.volunteercornwall.org.uk/
